2012 Shoulder pad change

Only major change in suit construction in 2012 (as of today) is a change in the shoulder construction. 2011 saw a change to an unpadded shoulder, and after reviewing feedback on going from a lightly padded shoulder to unpadded, while most didnt seem to notice or even preferred it, there were a few that definitely needed the shoulder pad because of their physiology, as an unpadded shoulder works best on straight shoulders, and if you have a bit of slope then it's not the preferred construction style. So as of now, all 2012 orders by default will feature a very light hand padded shoulder pad (vs machine padded) which should result in a uniform pad thickness for all suits (machine padding can have varying margin of error thickness). If you'd still like an unpadded jacket shoulder just mention it when you order and that can be accomodated. Thanks

Separates suit in flannel

We Love Love Love separates suits at Thick as Thieves. I think it's a great way to look smart with just enough casual vibe. It's also the best way to expand your wardrobe without buying anything new if you have a few suits to mix/match from. This example is in flannel, navy flannel jacket with burgundy flannel trouser. It's personally my favorite color combo to pair together and it's nice to see W also feel the same and he looks to be carrying it off with aplomb!

2011 Holiday Schedule

This is the last week to place orders where they will be guaranteed to ship before December 24th (pending any unforeseen delay), so if you need to have a suit in your hands for Christmas or New Years please place orders by no later than this friday the 18th. If you place the order after the 18th, there is still a chance you may get it shipped by Dec 24th, but it is not certain it will.

Also please note that any orders that have not shipped by Dec 24th will not ship until after JANUARY 9th as I will be out of town for the 2 weeks right after Christmas until the 8th. So also please keep that in mind, even if you don't need a suit in time for Xmas/NYE, that first week of January will have no deliveries either so please plan accordingly!

An example of a jacket made in Tweed #5, from 2011 fall tweeds. This jacket has Mother of Pearl buttons with patch pockets. Unfortunately I think the lighting is off, and the photos appear a bit too "blue". This is a cool grey shade, but does not have any blueness to it. The swatch in the fabric page is more true to real color, but these photos give a sense of the overall scale of the plaid and its effect as a full garment.

Crombie Overcoat

Thick is Thieves is now offering an overcoat in traditional "crombie/chesterfield/covert" coat style. The cloth is a cashmere/wool blend which is very soft, almost velvety and is a typical overcoat weight cloth, good for cool fall/winter days. Overcoats are $600 shipped Conus.

Burgundy flannel fun jacket

This jacket is a 3/2 (lapel rolls to middle button on a 3-button stance), undarted patch pocket jacket made from burgundy flannel. This jacket is very casual, all pockets are patched with contrast color topstitching in a powder blue, and lapels are also topstitched in powder blue. Bottom-most sleeve buttonhole and middle buttonhole are also done in powder blue. Buttons are in a bronze Mother of Pearl. The one thing to learn from this photo, don't keep your cell phone in your jacket pocket if you want to avoid unsightly bulges! Trousers are also Thick as Thieves, made from the now sold out Petrol Blue sharkskin.

100% Silk cloth sample!

This is the first sample of a pure 100% silk cloth woven a French Blue color. The sampling for this cloth is still underway, but as a first sampling, the result was far better than I expected. The cloth is pure silk, so has a slight sheen similar to sharkskin, but it is not "shiny" in the way you would think pure silk cloth to be. The cloth is smooth but has some textural hand to it. The best thing about this cloth is that I will be able to control the color, so any popular colors that sell out can be restocked in this material (such as Petrol Blue). This first batch was done to a French "cornflower" blue, definitely not a workplace suit, but for those looking for something unique this is definitely going to fit the bill. The cloth is very lightweight and has a fantastic drape to it. You can even smell the pure silk fibre which has its own distinct scent. While not as wrinkly as linen, it is def a "needs some care" cloth and I would recommend a good steaming out to de-wrinkle the cloth every couple wears. Tho after a night of dancing to 60s R'nB and rockabilly, it def roadtested well and I didnt look as disheveled as I thought I might have afterwards. This cloth is still in sampling process to tighten the weave and sort out any inconsistencies, but keep an eye out in very near future for some offereings in this cloth. Price is still a bit TBD but will be in line with my pricing point.

Fall/Winter news

Some new tidbits coming for this fall/winter:

-Addition of new tweeds starting first week of september
-later in the season hopefully will add a chesterfield/crombie style overcoat to our selection
-new cloths for our suits, including pure cashmere suiting cloths and 100% silk cloths. Both will be custom designed by Thick as Thieves for color and patterns, so this should be a good way to keep popular colors and check patterns in stock as the fabric will be made exclusively for me so there won't be an issue of restock availability! More info to come as samples are made and approved...!!!

Three Bad Jacks have been around the rockabilly scene for over 10+ years now, and just released their third record "Pictures and Memories from Home". They've gigged all over the States as well as Europe with their catchy brand of rockabilly/rock and roll. Elvis is one of the most soulful singers in the rockabilly scene which is evident in the new record which incorporates 1960s garage and soul influences to his song writing. Think of it as The Sonics collaborating with Otis Redding and you get the idea...

PRICE INCREASE, SORT OF BUT NOT REALLY

As many of you know, since I started doing this in 2007, I've never had a price increase as far as markup on my end. Yes, prices have gone up but that's only because better fabrics were used and any price increase reflected on just the higher cost of cloth, with no additional profit markup.

Unfortunately, with the increase in cost of materials, transit, etc that directly go into each suit, I've been eating a lot of the surcharges for the last year without passing them on in the form of higher pricing but with recent cost increase, I will have to increase prices. BUT NOT REALLY, as this price increase won't affect many of you who are fist time customers.

As of May 15th, the price for repeat customers, who I normally knock off a few $ as a token of appreciation, will be the same as first time buyers. So you won't necessarily be paying more, but I won't be offering the "thanks for coming back" discount that I normally do. This way, I don't have to raise the prices and you'd be paying the same, imho, low price as everyone else without any extra discount on top. Obviously I am thrilled that many of you come back for suits #2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc, but I feel this is the best way to combat increase in cost of business while not actually raising pricing for anyone. I'm sure I'll figure out some way to give repeat buyers a break...

The price will be same as it's been for past couple years for first time customers, price depending on fabric choice.

this is "Lil Mo" of LA based doowop/rockabilly band Lil Mo and the Dynaflos. He also sings for a traditional rockabilly band called The Unholy 4, as well as Blue Denim. He's sporting a 1 button burgundy flannel suit (color is not as purple as the light makes it out to be), with slight "Teddy Boy" details (velvet half collar, velvet trim around pockets)

Tuxedo

I get quite a few requests for pics of the tuxedo, here is one that was sent to me recently that I think is a good example. 1 button, peak lapels (2.75" wide), single button jacket, satin trim. The pockets have flaps but they can also be tucked in to give the jetted look, as this photo illustrates. Normally I angle the pockets on the tux jacket (no ticket pocket of course), but this client requested the pockets be horizontal.

A few updates as of 1-17-2011 that might be of interest....

-If you ordered a suit before 1-1-2011, it will ship this week of 17th by saturday latest, but most likely sooner. As usual, when it finally gets en route to you, you will receive an email confirmation of such.

-As I'm finally all caught up now, rush orders will be taken into account with the usual caveat of $60 surcharge for orders needed in less than 1 month. But as I always like to remind you, keep in mind that when you place a rush order, you will 99.9% have it in time, but you need to take into account that it will need to be pressed and if there are any fit issues that require additional tailor you may not have time to accomodate that, so please give yourselves enough time to account for such issues.

-I mentioned adding 2 "designer" cloths this year, from Versace's mill. One is a medium grey windowcheck and the other a burgundy/black striped pattern. I received the finished samples of both cloths in a full suit and I'm really happy with these cloths. Photos will be uploaded by monday morning so check back then to the Lookbook to see them "in real life". Prices will be a bit higher due to fabric cost but as usual I have kept the prices as low as possible and I don't think anyone will be disappointed with either cloth. If there is enough interest I will gradually add more "designer cloth", but I highly recommend making your first suit with me in a standard priced cloth. But if you'd like your first suit to be in the Versace cloth that is no problem to do so.

-There is one change to how the suits will be made this year, due to what seems like a popular request, all jackets from today forward will have no shoulder padding so it will be a very light shoulder construction. There is still a small amount of structure via the front canvassing extending up to the shoulder to provided a minimal amount of structure/support. If you have ordered previously and still want the light padding, please request that and we can do it 2010 style. Hopefully everyone else will like the lighter shoulder construction.

NEW POLICY FOR OVERSEAS ORDERS

As of now, there are NO RUSH orders taken for any shipments that go overseas (incl Canada). The typical timeframe is 4 weeks before your order is shipped to you, most destinations take 7-10 days but it can be longer if there are customs issues. So if you are overseas and need it for a specific date keep this timeframe in mind when ordering, DO NOT tell me you need it for a specific date because there will be no more considerations for international shipment rush orders. Sorry for any inconvenience but that's the way it goes.

Similar to the other 1 button suit, this is also single button, with patch pockets but no flap, and the breast pocket is patched as well. All topstitched around lapels (2.75" wide) and pockets. MOP buttons as well. This jacket also features an undarted construction for a cleaner front quarter appearance. Please disregard what looks like a discoloration on the cloth, it means my camera lens needs cleaning!

This is a 1-button suit, with topstitched lapels and a flap patch pocket. Single button on cuff. Lapels are 2.5" wide and you might notice the jacket is undarted in a classic ivy league style for a cleaner frontal appearance.

We Are The Mods - new film!

If you're in Los Angeles, there are a couple days left for the showing of E.E. Cassidy's film, We Are The Mods, playing at the Downtown Independent Theatre on Main St (between 2nd and 3rd). Go check it out, support the local independent film scene!!

Closeup: 2 button Traditional (aka Conservative) jacket

For those looking for a first suit, an interview/work suit, or an all purpose suit, most go for the 2-button suit in the traditional (previously known as Conservative) cut jacket. There seemed to be a misnomer with the term "conservative" in that it was thought the fit was loose/baggy, compared to the house cut. The fit through the body is nearly same between the Traditional and House cuts. The largest difference is in the detailing.

The specific details for the Traditional cut is:
-wider lapel, 2.5" across (House cut is 2") on a size 34-40, 2.75" on a size 42
-jacket length closer to normal The house cut jacket ends around the top thumb joint, the traditional cut jacket ends about an inch or so longer at the middle thumb joint.
-Ticket pocket is nonoverlapping. (Or can be omitted altogether)
-Trousers have normal side slant handwarmer pockets (instead of frogmouth/jean style)
-Trouser hem is not as tapered as House cut trouser. It's still tapered to give a slim look but not nearly as tight at the ankle which does create a more relaxed fit thru the leg, while maintaining a slim profile.

So for those who ask for the house cut but want to make changes and do a wider lapel, longer jacket, no ticket pocket, side slant trouser pockets and less taper thru the leg are in essence asking for the Traditional cut, just to clarify.

The fabric shown in this sample suit is the S/S 2010 Navy Nailhead wool which is a lightweight fabric in approx 8oz cloth.

Sharkskin suit

This is a unique style of suiting, using a client's own sharkskin fabric. Excuse the wrinkles as it is yet unpressed!! It is a 3-button cut with fabric covered buttons, and multiple ticket pockets on each side. Sleeves have 6 fabric covered buttons on each side. The left photo shows its 2-tone sheen when hit with the camera flash, the right side in neutral light to see the details clearer. This is a perfect suit for the next time Roy Ellis comes to your town to play a gig!!

Sir Paul Smith!

Patch pocket sport coat

A 3 button patch pocket sport coat in "true navy blue new tweed". This jacket has contrast light blue topstitching around the lapels, front quarters, and around the patch pockets. The buttons are a mix of grey Mother of Pearl and a single white Mother of Pearl on the middle button as well as at the end of each sleeve. This jacket is an idea of a fun social jacket that doesn't need to conform to convention (or good taste even)! Jacket is worn with trousers made from the "sage green new tweed" fabric.

Here is a detail of the sleeves on this navy tweed jacket. There are 5 buttons total, 4 in smoky grey Mother of Pearl, and the bottom-most button in white Mother of Pearl. The white button also has a white stitched buttonhole and is slightly larger in size than the grey ones. Just an example of a "fun" detail for sport jackets that don't need to be so serious nor follow convention. The fabric is the "true blue navy new tweed".

Here's a closeup photo of patch pockets with flap. It is topstitched, in this case in a light blue thread for contrast, although the topstitching is generally done in a self color thread. This particular jacket is a "fun jacket" for social wear, as it has contrast light blue topstitching throughout along with different colored Mother of Pearl buttons. The fabric used is the "true blue navy new tweed".

A close up photo of house cut frogmouth pockets. The advantages, besides just looking cool, is it keeps the trouser silhouette when you're moving around, as normal side slant pockets will gape open a bit especially if you are bending over. The disadvantage is if you use your pockets to carry a lot of items, it is harder to access, but we don't advocate carrying more than 1 item in each pocket!! The fabric on this trouser is the sage-green "new tweed".

Welcome to 2010!

2009 was a good year for Thick as Thieves and 2010 is starting off well so thanks to everyone for their support. Some of the changes this year include some small tweeks to the general pattern that should address minor fit issues that some guys encounter, primarily adjusting the armhole shape so that it is still on the higher side but also to facilitate movement and not be as tight on larger deltoided fellows.

-A website design update will happen sometime sooner than later, with more detail photos that will hopefully answer some common questions about what things look like.

-The self measure page will soon include a link to a video that will have me measuring someone so you can visually see for yourself how I would do it. I'm sure this is something a lot of you want so it will be on the priority list to have done very soon.

-New fabrics will be added as we get closer to spring.

-One of the most frequent questions I get asked is if I make shirts, especially a solid white shirt? No, and while I don't have any immediate plans to do so I am trying to work out some details with shirtmakers who are already making awesome shirts that I highly endorse and wear myself to do a "Thick as Thieves" collaboration of sorts that will start off with a good basic white shirt which can be worn with the suitings. The price will be accessible to nearly anyone and the quality of the shirt is guaranteed to be of the level that you'd usually find in shirtings that cost double or more.

New grey windowcheck tweed jacket

Here are some closeups of one of the new tweeds still available. The base color is a med grey with tan windowcheck. This jacket has topstiched lapels and patch pockets which are also topstitched. The fabric is not a super heavy tweed, but is easily wearable well into late spring. The fabric has a soft finish to it and is definitely the best tweed we've had to offer to date.

Corduroy casual jacket

NOW AVAILABLE! Oxblood burgundy fine wale corduroy jacket and trousers (jacket shown in pics but trouser can also be made). This jacket is a 2 button cut. Details include:
-topstitched lapels
-flap patch pockets w/topstitching around pockets
-single back vent
-short "bumfreezer" jacket length, just slightly longer than sleeve level
-red buttons, 2 on each sleeve

Take a look at these quick photos of the oxblood color which should be pretty accurate, 1 or 2 more corduroy colors to come by end of September. This fabric is very limited and only a small number of jackets/trousers will be made. Once the fabric is gone, that's it.

2 button Traditional suit

Here is a client photo that is a great example of the 2 button traditional (aka conservative cut) cut suit. The Traditional/conservative cut is not loosely fitting. It is still fitted as are all Thick as Thieves suit, the difference is mostly in the details, with less aggressive detailing. The lapels are slightly wider, jacket length slightly longer (closer to "normal"), traditional styled ticket pocket, side slant trouser pockets. The fit is still fitted, the only difference from the house cut is the trouser has less taper so it isn't as skinny down towards the leg hem.

Every so often I actually listen to what my clients want, well I ALWAYS listen, but don't necessarily do anything about it (!) Having gotten quite a few requests for a formal tuxedo, I decided to give it a go since my house cut one button suit wasn't too far removed from a tuxedo style. So here is the first offering of a 2 piece tux (no cummerbund, but does anyone even wear one anymore?) Black peak lapel, one button design. Jacket is unvented, all buttons are satin covered, single button on jacket sleeve, satin lapels and trim on jacket, satin stripe down trouser leg. Trouser has no rear pockets and 2 button'd side tabs rather than belt loops. So next time you need to go to a black tie event, show up in style.

This jacket is a one button notch lapel in the "Petrol Blue", tho it has photo'd more grey but the fabric is definitely a blue tone. The jacket also has swelled seams at the lapels (an homage to vintage styled jacket lapels) and has Mother of Pearl buttons, which are now available at a slight surcharge. Normally the notch lapel One Button jacket has horizontal pockets, but this one has the angled hacking pockets, with the house detail overlapping ticket pocket.

New for Spring/Summer: Half Lined Jackets

For those of you looking for a warm weather jacket, this is a new construction option....a half lined jacket. Now personally I don't believe a "warm weather" jacket exists in any capacity but this will definitely be more wearable when paired with a lighter weight fabric like the recent new Greys and Herringbones. More summer fabrics to come in near future as well.

The jacket is half lined as you can see, with taped seams using the lining as edge reinforcement.

WARNING: NOT FOR "iGENTS" or the meek at heart. 4 button suit, very high button position with angled pockets and overlapping ticket pocket. This style is the quintessential "mod suit" made popular in the mid 1960s and saw a resurgence in the mid 1990s as a "high designer" staple cut. The 2 button suit may be en vogue and de rigeur in the 2000s, but the 4 button suit will definitely set you apart as someone with "suss". This is a tailored casual jacket, based on a classic Varsity Letterman's jacket. The jacket shown here is 2 grey flannels (light and dark) but ANY 2 fabrics can be matched together. It's recommended you stick with similar weight material, but the options are up to your imagination. Buttons are large high quality Mother of Pearl with 6 front button closure and 1 functional button at the sleeve cuff. Jacket has 2" shawl lapel with side slash handwarmer pockets. Adjustable side tab detail (actual jacket will not have the 2nd button as the side tab is aesthetic and not meant to function as such). This is a MTO jacket based on your specs, cost depends on fabric chosen, but most fabrics will sell for $320 shipped conus.
